01The seasonal evidence
A large 2009 study analyzing hair loss patterns across multiple populations found a statistically significant peak in the proportion of telogen-phase hairs in late summer (around August–September), followed by a shed peak in fall. The proposed mechanism involves photoperiod changes — day length affects melatonin and prolactin levels, which influence the hair cycle.
Unlike animals with dramatic seasonal coats, humans show a subtle but measurable peak of telogen hairs in late summer. The subsequent fall shedding is proportional to how many follicles entered telogen. The shed is real — and temporary.
02Why it matters for men with AGA
Men with androgenetic alopecia have a higher baseline proportion of telogen and miniaturized hairs to begin with. When seasonal variation adds another 5–10% telogen shift on top of that baseline, the visible shedding can be alarming — particularly for men not expecting it. The fall shed in an AGA patient looks worse than in someone without AGA, not because the seasonal component is bigger, but because the starting point is lower.
The key question to ask yourself: is this a sustained progressive loss over months, or an acute increase that plateaus and then slows? Seasonal TE is the latter. AGA-driven loss is the former. If your Norwood stage is stable but the fall shed is alarming, you're probably seeing normal seasonal variation on an AGA background — concerning to experience, but not a new trend.
03The vitamin D connection
Vitamin D levels typically drop in late fall and winter in northern latitudes — the same period when many men notice increased shedding. Vitamin D deficiency has its own documented hair cycle impact. This is a correlation, not a proven cause, but checking and supplementing vitamin D in fall/winter is a cheap, low-risk intervention with solid general health rationale.
04What to actually do
Nothing special if your treatment baseline is already in place. Seasonal variation resolves on its own. The intervention is maintaining your medication consistently through it — stopping finasteride or minoxidil because "it stopped working" during a fall shed is the most common and most costly mistake. The seasonal shed is weather; the medication is your permanent climate control.
