The field has real science behind it — but the consumer products built on that science are running considerably ahead of what they can actually deliver. Here's where the genetics genuinely matter and where the products are overselling.

01What the genetics of AGA actually look like

Androgenetic alopecia is polygenic — driven by many gene variants, not a single "baldness gene." The most well-characterized is a variant on the androgen receptor gene (AR), inherited through the X chromosome (which is why the "look at your maternal grandfather" advice has some basis). But dozens of other loci contribute, and the genetic architecture is complex enough that no current test can reliably predict your eventual Norwood stage from a saliva sample.

Consumer genetic tests for hair loss have modest predictive accuracy — meaningful at the population level, but not reliable enough to tell any individual man what his specific trajectory will be. A positive result doesn't mean you'll go bald; a negative result doesn't mean you won't.

04The bottom line on genetic testing

A positive AR variant result + visible AGA = start treatment. A negative result with visible AGA = still start treatment. The mirror provides better prediction than a saliva kit for the simple question of "am I losing hair?"
