02Safe donor zone vs. extended donor zone

Not all donor hair is equal. Key variables that affect how much coverage you can achieve:
- Follicular unit size: some follicles contain 1 hair, others 2, 3, or even 4. Multi-hair grafts provide more visual density per extracted unit.
- Hair caliber: thicker, coarser hair provides dramatically more visual coverage per graft than fine, light hair. A man with coarse dark hair and a Norwood V may achieve better results than a man with fine blonde hair at Norwood III.
- Donor density: baseline number of follicular units per cm² determines how much can be safely harvested without visible donor thinning.
The planning implication: a proper pre-transplant consultation maps your safe donor zone, measures density, and calculates realistic harvestable supply across your lifetime. Anyone who skips this and just schedules a session based on your Norwood stage alone is working without critical information.
04Preserving your donor investment
