Here is what the peer-reviewed data actually demonstrates, how to interpret the 20-minute claim, and what remains unknown.
The Koyama 2016 Study: What It Actually Found
The foundational study (Koyama et al., ePlasty, 2016) enrolled 9 healthy Japanese men in a standardized scalp massage protocol — 4 minutes of daily standardized massage using a custom device — for 24 weeks. Result: hair thickness (not density/count) increased significantly by week 24. Hair shedding during washout period was also reduced.
The sample size of 9 is small for drawing broad conclusions. Participants were healthy volunteers, not men with pattern hair loss.
