The 2026 Study That Finally Ranked Every Hair Loss Treatment
A network meta-analysis pooled 24 trials to rank every major hair-loss drug head-to-head. Here's the order — and why the winner isn't automatically your best choice.
For decades the men's hair-loss conversation ran on vibes and forum anecdotes. That changed when researchers started running network meta-analyses — a statistical method that pools dozens of trials and ranks every treatment against every other, even ones never tested head-to-head. The 2025 analysis by Aditya Gupta and colleagues, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, is the most complete ranking we have going into 2026. Here's what it found, in plain English.
01What the study actually did
The team pulled together 24 randomized trials covering eight standard drugs and seven over-the-counter "natural" products. They used a metric called SUCRA — think of it as a percentage score for how likely a treatment is to be the best option. Higher is better. A perfect 100% would mean a drug beat everything else in every trial.
Oral dutasteride 0.5 mg finished first, with a SUCRA of about 96% and a mean improvement of roughly 19 hairs per square centimeter over placebo — the top-ranked monotherapy in the analysis.

The catch nobody puts in the headline: "most effective" is not the same as "best for you."
